Again, thank you for the sweet comments on Knox & Sloane’s Halloween costumes! Also, last night, I did a “Halloween Treats & Decor Linky” post. I’d love to see your Halloween treats & decor/party pics!
As I’ve talked about in many other posts, Brent and I really aim to be more of a “green” home. We simply want to do our part to help keep our environment a clean place. If everyone would do small things around their house, it would equal a much larger change. I’m sure we could do more, but we are making a good effort!
I wanted to talk about some things Brent and I do in our home.
We recycle. Our faucet water is just not very tasty. Therefore, it’s not uncommon for us to grab a case of bottled water at the grocery store. Well, we recycle all of those bottles. I certainly hate to think that our bottles are ending up in the ocean or landfills.
We also recycle the plastic grocery sacks if we get those at the store. Sometimes, I remember to take my reusable sacks.
We use energy-efficient light bulbs to save energy and also help our electric bill. We definitely saw a dramatic decrease in the bill once we started using these light bulbs! I got these from Home Depot, and they are on my list to get more when I head back.
We do try to go all day with no lights on in the house. I would much rather have natural daylight beaming in as a refresher. Now, this can be tricky in the summer because you don’t want open blinds causing the house to warm up. Typically, I’ll open the blinds early morning, close during hottest part of day, and then maybe open later at night, since the daylight lasts until around 9pm.
I try to buy natural soaps and shampoos. Part of my previous job was in the medical industry, and I would read articles and scientific studies indicating there are tons of harmful products in soap and shampoo.
Around our home, I like things to stay tidy. I don’t want to see bugs or dust. I try to buy household cleaning products and bug sprays that are more “green,” with goals to be more environmental friendly.
I also don’t want to spray my counter tops with something with a bunch of chemicals on it. That spray can easily fly up on my fruit basket, and we would never know. Then, we would eat it.
These are some products I have also picked up at Home Depot. I have truly enjoyed using all of them. It makes me feel better to know our family is actually on the safer side using these things and they are more environmentally friendly.
The J.R. Watkins Spray I use on bathroom counter tops, kitchen sink, fridge handles, etc. I got them lemon scent, and it smells great. It doesn’t have a strong “chemical” smell to it. The Pledge Multi Surface is AWESOME. You can pretty much use it on everything! It’s 99% natural. So, not only can I use it on wood around the house, I can spray it on my granite counter tops in my kitchen and not really worry if a tiny bit gets up on the fruit basket!
As for bug spray. We randomly spray this around the house. It’s the Earth Options Raid brand. Again, more “green.” My biggest issue with buy spray is usually the HORRID smell. This one is not NEARLY as strong as most. I don’t have to be worried if Elton were to get close to it or get his paw in it.
I’m so thankful Home Depot had all these products. It really just takes a minor change in every household to see a big difference in our planet. Now, if everyone would realize that 🙂 Brent and I will continue to do the things we’ve been doing as well as look for “green” products at Home Depot each time we go 🙂
